In “Brave New World” Henry Ford symbolizes God. One method that Huxley portrayed his satire through was by referring to Henry Ford as God in his writing. Since “Brave New World” was written in 1931, when so many technological advancements were taking place, it portrayed a satirical yet haunting vision of what technology could entail. Through Henry Ford’s innovation and forward thinking, he revolutionized the world, and because of this, he is regarded as a symbol of progress and innovation. This affordability resulted in the mass production of cars. However, in 1913 Henry Ford implemented the assembly line in his factories which “ cut the number of workers required and reduced the time it took to assemble a car”, due to reduced workers, he was able to cut the cost of cars making them more affordable to the public (Smithsonian). In the early 1900’s cars were novelty items that only a few could afford. However, what they encounter there changes their lives.Īt the turn of the 20th century, several technological advancements were taking place. Together they travel to New Mexico to a “savage reserve” (Huxley). Lenina Crowne is a Beta, she is very desirable yet conforms to society. However, Bernard Marx an Alpha Psychologist rejects the ideas of society and in turn, is alienated by the people of his caste. Everybody in the hierarchy is conditioned from birth to be happy in their role and not to question the government. The caste order from most superior to least superior is: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon. Everyone in the World State belongs to a certain caste in social hierarchy. “The Brave New World” is a dystopian novel set in the World State (London) which portrays the haunting effects of technological advancements. In Aldous Huxley’s novel “The Brave New World” he utilizes several archetypal characters and symbols such as referring to Henry Ford as God, using the archetypal ‘Outsider’ character and the repetition of the number twelve in order to illustrate his views on the new technology of the 1920s.
